If you are reading this in September, your 2026 Halloween stock should already be on the water — or on shelves. Halloween hits October 31, and the retail selling window opens in late September. Wholesale buyers who understand the calendar placed their China orders between March and July, and shipped before the summer freight rush.
There is a common misconception that Halloween — being the smaller season — can be ordered later than Christmas. In practice it is the opposite. Halloween goods must land and reach stores by mid-to-late September to catch the full selling window, which means cargo must leave China by early July at the latest. Christmas stock, by comparison, can still slip out in July-August and arrive for an October-November shelf date.
Add a 45-60 day ocean transit to the US West Coast or Europe, plus production lead time of 30-45 days, and the math is simple: order by April-May, ship by June-July. Late-August orders are air-freight territory, and September orders are for next year.
This is when Chinese factories finalize their new Halloween ranges and when mold-making and custom work is cheapest and fastest. Order samples in Q1, check finishes and packaging, and lock your supplier relationship before the seasonal rush.
The sweet spot. Factory capacity is open, production lead times are normal, and ocean freight rates are still below the Q3 peak. Orders confirmed in April-May ship in June-July.
Cargo must leave China by early July to clear transit, customs and warehousing in time for late-September shelf dates. After this window you are gambling on peak-season surcharges, port congestion and missed marketing calendars.
Anything ordered after August will miss Halloween 2027 unless you pay 5-8x air freight — which erases margin on low-value decor. Use this period to plan Q1 samples instead.
